The article analyzes the causes of the political crisis in Slovakia during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021. The “COVID crisis” has become a significant obstacle to the normal functioning of the coalition government formed by the results of the 2020 elections. To stay in power, the coalition was forced to undertake a serious reformatting of the cabinet, imitating the resignation of the government. The inevitability of a political crisis and the resignation of I. Matovich’s government became clear long before the outbreak of the pandemic. This is due to the fact that the four political entities that formed the coalition government of Slovakia in early 2020 are not traditional parties in the strict sense of the word, but amorphous political movements without clear charters and programs, party membership and networks of primary organizations and are united only by the desire to re-move the government of the Social Democrats from power. The authors conclude that, in fact, these are “virtu-al” parties recruiting their electorate in social networks. The article presents a chronology of political events in Slovakia against the background of the pandemic and concludes that the purchase of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, uncoordinated with partners in the ruling coalition on the initiative of Prime Minister Igor Matovich in March 2021, served as a trigger for the political crisis of power that broke out in the summer of 2021 and the re-shuffle of the Matovich-Heger government.
